Former Histon and Cambridge City footballer Ian Cambridge showed his prowess on the golf course with a victory in the Ron Freeman County Foursomes Knockout Championship final on Sunday.

Cambridge, who scored for the Stutes in their famous FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town in 2004, triumphed 4&2 alongside his playing partner Richard Southall at the expense of Matt Pearce and Paul Hodgkin.

The opening four holes were halved at The Links in Newmarket before Southall and Cambridge went 1up on the fifth hole after their opponents lost a ball.

The Saffron Walden pairing went 2up with a four at the seventh hole, while holes eight, nine and 10 were all halved.

Ely City’s Pearce then showed his pedigree with an iron shot under the trees to set up a birdie for Hodgkin to bring the score back to 1up.

However, the defining hole was the 14th when Cambridge nearly drove to the green and Southall chipped to a couple of feet to make a birdie.

They then won the 15th with a five to go 3up going into the 16th hole, where both pairings hit the green in regulation before Cambridge holed a long putt for a birdie to win the match.
